Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds
By: David Goggins
This book was introduced to me as part of a book club I do with a few girlfriends. This was the first biography/self help type of book that we read as a group and I can’t thank my friend enough for choosing it for us to read.
Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed this book! I loved the story of how David Goggins changed his mindset and pushed himself to new heights. The book is written in a chronological time of events from when David was young to now. At the end of each chapter, he gives you challenges to work with in your own journey to mastering your mind. I truly walked away with a newer perspective on pushing myself past any type of limits I thought I had.
Only you can master your mind, which is what it takes to live a bold life filled with accomplishments most people consider beyond their capability.
-David Goggins, Can’t Hurt Me
I think for many of us, after we leave any type of formal education system, we forget that we have more potential to unlock. As a result, there’s no-one there to push you but yourself. I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I became super comfortable with just cruising by. Choosing to be uncomfortable and pushing past it is something David talks a lot about in this book. Maybe you’ve thought some of the things in the back of your mind. But there was something about hearing them from his perspective that awoke a drive in me.
Some of my friends in our book club liked the audio version. They said it was part reading the book and part podcast with the reader asking David questions and giving you even more insight into the book. Some of my friends really liked this, but some thought it was a little confusing. One friend noted their discussions would happen in the middle of reading a chapter. To each their own I guess. My suggestion would be to read the book first and if you’re feeling inspired listen to the audio version to get even more out of it.
